The VIN was a sequential number that started at 1001 on the first Chrysler (Model B ) back in 1924.
There were breaks in the sequences between model years and each make had its own group of numbers starting spring, 1930. In the case of the 1955 Dodge, there were three Engineering Dept. Model Codes - D54, D55, D56 and D59. The D54 was the Plymouth-based Dodge 6 built for export (Kingsway ) and in Canada: D54: D54-1 (Kingsway 6 / Crusader 6 ); D54-2 (Kingsway 6 Custom / Regent 6 ); D54-4 (Mayfair 6 ) D55 and D56 were the U.S. Market Dodges (Custom Royal also built in Canada ): D55: D55-1 (Coronet V8 ); D55-2 (Royal V8 ); D55-3 (Custom Royal V8 ) D56: D56 (Coronet 6 ) - U.S.
Only: Detroit production: 32,192,001 to 32,225,514: 33,514 built Los Angeles production: 48,016,001 to 48,016,299: 299 built The D59 was the Plymouth-based Dodge V8 built for export (Kingsway ) and in Canada: D59: D59-1 (Kingsway V8 ); D59-2 (Kingsway V8 Custom / Mayfair V8 ) So, if your VIN is between 31,192,001 and 32,225,514, you have a Detroit-built 1955 Dodge Coronet 6. If is is between 48,016,001 and 48.016,299, you have a 1955 Dodge Coronet 6 built at Los Angeles. All you can tell is where it was built and what number it was off the assembly line. By 1959 Chrysler Corp. Serial numbers had make, series, model year and assembly plant plus six digit sequential number (10 digits ). In 1966 the engine and body style were added (13 digits ).
And in 1981 the present 17 digit VIN was adopted. Posted 2013-06-23 7:23 PM (#382533 - in reply to #382322) Subject: Re: 1955 dodge coronet six Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19171 Location: bishop, ca Hola, Ricardo!
The VIN's on our cars do not really break-down, information-wise, like the later 60's VIN's do. Bill has told you about all that your car's VIN can provide. The Paint/Trim data plates were first introduced around June 1955, for the Dodges. Even if your car has a P/T plate on it (upper firewall area ), there will not be a lot of detailed information on your car's build-equipment. Your best bet is to contact the Chrysler Historical Society (contact information is provided in this thread's first two 'sticky' messages, at the top of this discussion board ), to confirm the various options and accessories that your car was built with. Coronet, Royal, Custom Royal, Suburban, and Sierra model year totals for 1955 and 1956 are from Wards. Wards totals match serial numbers closely for 1955, but serial numbers for 1956 appear to be incomplete and fall below the Wards total.
